The city's weather is the reason exterior work here has to be done properly: Calgary sits in one of the most active hail zones in Canada, chinook winds swing temperatures by twenty degrees in a day, and freeze thaw cycles work water into every gap.

Airdrie sits just north of Calgary in the same hail belt, and its newer subdivisions were largely built over the same couple of decades, which means a lot of roofs and builder grade sidings are reaching the end of their life at about the same time. Many Airdrie homes also have shingles and vinyl siding that have already taken a hail hit or two.

Cochrane sits west of Calgary at the edge of the foothills, where the wind comes down the Bow Valley harder than it does in the city.
